Biochar, methane emission, circularity, cow, buffalo, ruminant feeding and nutrition, milk production
We are available for participating in a project on strategies to reduce GHG in agricultural systems by reducing emissions from ruminant animals, litter and manure. We can provide the possible consortium with farm, biochar production, animals and technology for methane emission measurement and estimates, labs and consolidated experience. Research key points for us could be: 1) production, characterization and use of biochar for animal feed supplementation and litter/manure treatment, at farm level; 2) A biochar production protocol, will be defined and made available for further application and implementation (e.g. for registration process at the certifying bodies); 3) GHG production and emission measurement (on animals and stocks).
Sharing knowledge, experience and work on points 2 and 3 would be essential.
CREA is committed to improving environmental sustainability, in line with the climate objectives of the European Union as part of the Green New Deal and with the objective of fighting change which is one of the nine specific objectives of the CAP 2023 2027. CREA-Animal Production and Aquaculture Centre has been engaged in several National and European projects aiming to disseminate the strategies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions from livestock. Those projects have already shown that it is possible to significantly reduce the carbon footprint of livestock by adopting the adequate techniques. Other projects have been dealing since 2006 with calculation of emissions for the estimation of LU/ha, feeding strategies to lower emissions, LCA and biodiversity.
